Measuring Guide ... The Width

Now take your kitchen plan (outline), and measure the width of each of the walls, at this stage please ignore the position of any windows or doors.

Wherever possible measure the overall length of each wall, ideally at more than one height from the floor. (Do not be surprised if these measurements vary by as much as 20mm)

Once you have taken these measurements note the "smallest" length on to your plan outline.

Why the smallest measurement? ... It can be seem from the example above that one (or both) of the walls is not exactly perpendicular (the width between the walls is bigger at the top than the bottom).

If you had only taken one measurement (in the middle where it is easiest to measure) you would not have discovered this until you began fitting your kitchen, and then you would have found that ...

  1. Three 1000mm wall cabinets will fit between the two walls
  2. Three 1000mm floor cabinets will not!

If the smallest measurement is always used this situation will not happen.

[TIP] This is where the majority of mistakes are made, do not assume your walls are perfectly plumb, your corners are perfectly square, and your floor is perfectly level ... BECAUSE THEY ARE NOT!

Finished with the width? ... then lets move on to the height.
